Charmed – S1E19 – Out of Sight
I really enjoy this episode. It is the first of season one’s fantastic four final episodes. Was the excessive alliteration worth it? I think so.
The Grimlocks are actually really cool demons, and by that I guess I mean they’re one of the more interesting demons we have seen thus far. Don’t worry. Barbas is still at the top of my list of interesting demons, but the Grimlocks certainly made for an engaging story. Whenever children are involved, everyone with an ounce of warm fuzzies in their heart wants to watch and see that they are safely returned to the good side. Plus, it is through this story that Prue discovers that her powers have advanced, and that she can now channel them through her hands. Even though I know it was mostly a budgetary decision, yay for evolving characters.
I loved the Phoebe and Brent story. Those moments were my favorites, and their interactions are so sweet. Brent is one of a few one-off characters that I wish had gotten more than one episode. I honestly think the two of them would have made a good couple. With his knowledge of the existence of monsters, Phoebe has a great opportunity for a relationship in which she could be open about her gift from the start. Speaking of Brent, I’m pretty sure he’s the first non-supernatural human we have seen on the show who is aware of the existence of demons prior to the sisters telling him about them. What is even more interesting is the way in which Phoebe never even has to give her magic spiel to get him to help. Just the word “monster” is enough to convince him. It’s actually kind of refreshing.
The big kicker of the episode is that Andy finally finds out what Prue’s big secret is. He actually takes it surprisingly well…better than she did when she found out anyway. The best part about all of this is that it opens up the opportunity to see Prue and Andy have a completely honest conversation, should they choose to do so. There are no more secrets, unless Andy has something he’s been holding back. In other relationship news, Piper and Josh are officially over. I had to laugh at the way she handled the situation in his office. It was very in character to panic first, ask questions later. In the end, Piper makes the right decision to let Josh go. They clearly were not ready to talk long term commitment, but the bigger issue seems to be her unresolved feelings for a certain whitelighter/handyman.
The worst element of this episode, and the one which they honestly could have done away with, was the whole bit with Eric Lohman, world’s most annoying reporter. From a technical standpoint, the “evidence” he gets on tape is completely bogus, and does absolutely nothing to prove that the sisters have magic powers. Not to mention the fact that vandalizing the car was completely illegal. I’d have called the cops and had them haul the guy off to the looney bin. Accusations and evidence like the ones he had, combined with the stalker-like behavior and vandalism, if you can’t arrest a guy for that, then there is something seriously screwed up with our legal system.
Overall, like I said, I always enjoy watching this episode. Maybe it is just because there are so many important little story elements packed into the episode, or maybe I just think the Grimlocks are really cool demons. Either way, it’s a win.
Best Moment(s):
-Anything with Phoebe and Brent
Best Sibling Moment(s):
-Prue and Phoebe save one another from the Grimlocks
Best Quotes:
Prue: Great that's all we need is more toxic waste in our sewers.
Brent: I was right, you do have a beautiful smile
Andy: Prue, I'm not leaving the two of you alone.
Prue: Do I have to use my power on you?
Andy: I'll meet you up on the street.
