How To Get Away With Murder – S1E6 – Freaking Whack-a-Mole
One word. Wow. I can’t even form more words. I’m speechless. Wow.
I’ve had several moments watching this show where I have very loudly and verbally expressed my disbelief that certain things happened. The loudest of those moments definitely came from seeing Asher and Bonnie in bed together at the end of this episode. Wow. I never saw that coming. In any way shape or form. Laurel may be Frank’s girl, but it looks like Asher is now Bonnie’s boy as well. It seems interesting to me that Frank and Bonnie, while initially appearing to be very different in personality and in moral values, are becoming more and more similar as the season progresses. I’m not sure I agree with Bonnie that Laurel has been leading Frank on. He’s pretty much the one that started the whole flirtation, so why is Bonnie so defensive of his feelings? Frank’s a big boy. I think he can handle himself. Speaking of Frank, I have a feeling he’s in hot water now that Nate has evidence of him planting the phone. That’s not going to end well. We also now have reason to believe that Annaliese did not kill Sam, as she calls Bonnie frantically looking for him. I’m leaning closer and closer to the idea that maybe Wes killed Sam. We see he has some very similar vindictive tendencies to Annaliese when he is upset, and he is extremely protective of Rebecca. Will Annaliese cross a line again and push Wes over the edge, forcing him to retaliate? It’s possible. Then again, anything seems possible with this show.
I really loved getting Asher’s backstory in this episode, and discovering the real reason why he was selected as one of Annaliese’s interns. It turns out, daddy was a dirty judge. The fact that he gets so upset about this fact makes me actually genuinely like his character. I mean, anyone who watches the podcasts knows that I am a huge Asher fan anyway, but that was more so in terms of his being the “lovable, if not slightly fratty, idiot” of the group, so to speak. Now it’s clear that he actually seems to have some sort of moral compass, and he’s genuinely angered that his father lied his way to the top. His defense of his father, despite his misdeeds comes across as a noble act rather than a cover up. Regardless of what the guy did, he’s still family. Maybe there’s ulterior motive, but I chose to believe the best in my favorite character, so here’s to hoping he’s one of the good guys. All the present day scenes, apart from his final one with Bonnie, just serve as another reminder that no one really takes Asher seriously. However, they were still amusing to watch, and very in character.
The case of the week, or rather the appeal, was an awesome story. We finally get an indication of what might have made Annaliese choose to become a lawyer who just wins cases, versus a lawyer who fights for truth. Her dedication to this case, followed by her telling off a state senator was just all around great TV to watch. This is one of the first cases, apart from maybe the one with the kid who kills his cop father, where I really wanted them to win the case, and I was so happy to see that they did. I’m curious to see how much, if any, of the senator’s investigation we will get to see on air.
This episode was fantastic. Like seriously fantastic. I was gripped the whole time, and desperate to watch the next episode. Seriously, ABC. Keep doing whatever you’re doing. It’s working. You’ve got me. Hook, line and sinker. I love this show.
