Charmed – S1E6 – Wedding From Hell
This episode has actually grown on me since the first time I watched it. I’m not typically a fan of bridezilla-esque stories, so I think that upon first watch, I couldn’t get past that theme. Rewatching it, and seeing some of the other elements within the episode has kind of given me more respect for it. By no means is it my favorite episode, but it actually is a decent episode.
So, the whole bit throughout with Phoebe thinking that Piper was pregnant with a demon child was probably, no make that definitely, my favorite part of the episode. My only complaint is, if Piper didn’t want her sisters to see the test, why put it on the top of the trash? It’s not like Phoebe has to dig through the garbage and find it. All she has to do is look down, and it’s right there, and then she gets crap for being nosey. Come on now. Speaking of Phoebe, she has some great lines in this episode. That brings me to an interesting point. Even though the demon story is not that great in this episode, the writing is actually really strong in terms of dialogue. The scene in the beginning with Piper looking at the pregnancy test as she talks to her sisters was really cleverly written. There were other stand out lines, like Rex’s description of which sister was in Prue’s office, Phoebe’s line about how her visit to Prue was to “add more bricks to the wall between them” and Prue’s comment about having a “strange family tree.” I think it is easy to overlook this if you purely judge the episode by the demon story.
A couple of side notes, I actually liked Prue and Andy this episode. Prue finally seems to not be afraid to be in the same room as him, though her abrupt departure with the poignard might have suggested to him otherwise. Also, Rex and Hannah are officially evil, and they definitely know about demons and witchcraft.
Jade De Mon? Nice play on words. They actually use this same gag in a later episode as well. Anyway, this is the bridezilla story that I’m not such a big fan of. What I do like about it is the position that it puts Piper in. We see some character growth for her, as she is forced to be in a take-charge position when Chef Moore decides to go to Paris. Piper is not always one to be assertive and stand up for herself. She prefers to blend and just go with the flow, so it was good for her to be in a position where she had no choice but to be assertive. Phoebe vouching for her to the family also offered a nice sister moment. The episode does have a kind of “true love conquers all” theme to it. I actually liked Allison and Elliot’s story, and was happy to see that they ended up together in the end. There is also an element of “be careful what you wish for” with Elliot’s mother, and some commentary on wealth and class. Even Morris makes a comment about the “rich and shameless” and mentions that he and Andy get paid the “medium bucks.” Basically, being rich doesn’t buy happiness, and those in public service roles like cops don’t get paid what they deserve. That’s the message I took from that.
The show continues to find ways to reference the development of the sisters’ powers. The fact that Piper must be near something to freeze it, and also their conversation at the end of the episode shows that while they are beginning to understand their powers, the sisters still have a ways to go before they have any real control over them.
Overall, this episode is, I think, better on rewatch than it was on first viewing. The demon story is probably the part that makes it least appealing. What does make it fun to watch are the parts of the story that involve the sisters interactions. Like I said, some of those scenes were really well written. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that I would choose to watch this episode if I had to pick one of them, but by no means is it the worst episode of the series. I have a pick for that which will come at a much later time. Anyway, next episode!

Best Quote(s):
Rex: Prue, your, um, sister's here to see you. She's waiting in your office.
Prue: Which sister?
Rex: The one who upon seeing your office, said "Damn, I should go back to college."
Prue: Phoebe
Piper: I’m not pregnant. Trust me.
Prue: Well, that’s good news.
Phoebe: (Relieved and excited) Are you kidding? That’s great news. (She hugs Piper.) You can live.
