Ghost Whisperer – S2E12 – Dead to Rights
This episode was not one of my favorites. I feel like the whole trapped on life support story could have been really interesting, but it just wasn’t. I couldn’t get into the episode. Bob the therapy dog was adorable though.
There is a certain level of irony associated with the straightjacket comments Melinda makes when her and Jim discuss the mental patient she saw in the bathroom. Just prior to this, Delia walks in on her post-ghostly episode and after hearing the excuse of “nasty leg cramp” she turns around and walks away with a look that says “she’s a weird one.” I’m fairly certain that Delia is under the impression that Melinda is a bit of an odd duck.
Some of the stuff that the spirits put Melinda through is just super creepy. The mental patient in the bathroom was bad enough, but then there was the out of body experience, and the elevator closing in on her. I really don’t know how she deals with this on a daily basis. I’d go nuts. Oh, and the Latin writing on Jim’s back…creepy!
Professor Payne is jumping headlong into assisting with ghost busting now that he knows that is what he is doing. Despite warnings from Melinda that it may negatively impact his personal life, he seems pretty receptive to the idea of helping. His helping reveals a Latin message which suggests that Jim is at death’s door. No! Don’t let Jim die! I love him! He’s one of the main reasons I watch this show.
Ned and Delia finally sit down and officially talk about Charlie. The fact that Ned wanted to get rid of his father’s stuff due to the fact that he thought it was making his mother more upset than she should be was actually a fairly sweet gesture coming from him. The heart to heart that they have really made me feel for him. He came across as much less of an angsty teen in this episode, and more like a kid who still has not fully dealt with the loss of his father. It made him likable and relatable, and I actually cared about his character. Ned and Delia have been “not dealing” with this issue for so long, so it was nice to get their feelings out in the open. It was first also the first time we have gotten to see them really connect as mother and son.
Speaking of Ned, Melinda proved once again that she has a way with kids, as she was able to get him to open up about why he had tried to get rid of his father’s stuff. Ned also appears to want to be involved in the ghost busting game. So far, it’s not so bad that he knows her secret. I’m still waiting for the beans to spill though.
Overall, it was kind of a so-so episode, but it did have a few moments of redemption. The ghost story, however, was not one of them. I loved seeing William Russ from Boy Meets World, and he was fantastic, but the writing for the story just did not work for me. This season is doing a little bit better than season 1 with including the season arc throughout its episodes, however, I still feel like it needs to get to the meat faster. The cliffhanger at the end about someone, possibly Jim, dying soon would make a good jumping off point, however it will probably still be 8 episodes before we find out what that is about. Anyway, here’s to hoping next episode is an improvement.
Best Moment:
-Ned and Delia’s heart to heart
-Jim and Melinda’s discussion about what they would do if the other was on life support
Best Quote:
Professor Payne: I know this may be difficult to believe, but I may have made an error.
Melinda: I find it shocking that you're admitting it.
