Ghost Whisperer – S2E14 – Speed Demon
This was another decent episode. It was much lighter in content than the previous episode and actually incorporated quite a bit of humor.
I actually really enjoyed the ghost story this episode. They added some suspense to it with the underground racing club. Melinda and Jim also find themselves taking an unexpected joyride thanks to Gordon. After their little ride, they stop by Cindy’s garage, and through this we find out that Jim is a bit of a car aficionado. Cindy and Gordon’s relationship is an interesting one as they explore how shifts in power dynamics affect relationships. Gordon, who was initially the one showing Cindy the ropes of racing, felt that Cindy had started to upstage him. I think this is one of the first times they’ve had an initially vengeful love story, as Gordon spends most of the episode trying to kill Cindy since he thinks it is her fault he is dead. They also introduce a new reaction to someone discovering Melinda’s gift. Cindy pretty much just finds the idea amusing. She’s not upset, or annoyed. While she doesn’t necessarily believe Melinda, she isn’t as quick to dismiss her as most people. She approaches it with a “Well, if you believe that, then okay. Good for you” attitude. I also liked that the end result was that Gordon was in fact responsible for is own death. It was his own cockiness and dirty tricks that resulted in the crash that took his life. Gordon and Cindy make up, he crosses over, and all is right with the world. Jim does his fair share of helping out in this episode. I liked the way they incorporated the whole “men won’t ask for directions” bit. It was one of the elements of humor that I enjoyed. On a side note, the music in this episode was also fantastic.
Melinda meets Kate Payne, the professor’s wife. I’m pretty sure that she thinks her husband is having an affair with Melinda. The interactions Melinda has with the two of them confirms my previous suspicions that not all is right with their marriage. I’m curious to see if their relationship gets anymore play in coming episodes.
Ned found himself involved in this ghost story, though probably not in the way he would have liked. He is basically strong-armed by Melinda into introducing her to Ray Peters. The fact that Peters ends up being a pizza delivery guy added some further humor to the episode. It was a brat move though for Ned to threaten to reveal Melinda’s secret after she tells his mother who his “friends” are. He has kind of reverted back to the not-so-likable angsty teen. Despite this, on a certain level I almost want for Ned to have the opportunity to actually help Melinda with a ghost busting case. I feel like having a teenager’s perspective in some of these stories could add a new depth to the investigative process.
Overall, this is a pretty good episode. It is fast paced and entertaining, and the ghost story was well done. Again there is no tie-in with the Romano story, however, there was enough going on with the episode plot that it was not necessary to include anything more. That being said, it is the second half of the season now, so they should start including more hints. We are supposed to be seeing 5 signs of death, and I’m pretty sure we have only seen like 2. Anyway, good episode, but let’s get on to the next one!
Best Moment:
-Melinda asking for directions while Jim is distracted
Best Quote:
Melinda: Why is it so much harder when you're trying to get lost?
Jim: You're doing great, I have no idea where we are.
