Ghost Whisperer – S2E16 – The Cradle Will Rock
Woah! Intense. This episode was awesome. Possibly a tad scary for Melinda, but from an entertainment standpoint, it was awesome. It was the first episode in awhile that has really kept me engaged the whole time. Suspense and drama were the name of the game in this episode. This is also the first time we have a living person threatening Melinda’s life instead of a ghost. Remember that in the baseball episode it was a spirit in control of a human body posing the threat. In this episode Wyatt is acting entirely of his own accord.
When the ghost first appeared to Melinda after her nightmare, I had a feeling that it was Randy. Sadly, or possibly not so sadly, I was right. It turns out his death was kind of his own fault, as he was in on the robbery. This is somewhat reminiscent of the story of Jared the singer. We have a spirit who we initially believe to be good, only to find out that he is kind of evil. I have to give Melinda credit. She handles herself pretty well in these high-pressure situations. I was glad to see that, while it is in some senses a “damsel in distress” type situation, Melinda still manages to hold her own against Wyatt. Were it not for Randy’s ghostly interference, she would have managed to escape. Melinda is essentially the hero figure of this show, so as a viewer, I want to see evidence of this every once in awhile, and this episode provides that. Not to say that all the ghost busting doesn’t prove her to be a heroic, but this is one of the first times where she has found herself physically threatened by a non-ghostly entity. There is a difference between the two in my opinion. Anyway, I liked the ghost story this episode mostly in terms of the suspense it provided. I don’t think they’ve had an episode quite this dramatic since the Andrea story in the season 2 premiere. I mean, I’ve liked some of the episodes since then, but in terms of energy and suspense they all seem a tad anticlimactic in comparison.
The only complaint I had for this episode is that there was hardly any Jim, and it was a situation that I feel warranted much more of him. First, with Melinda being held hostage at the bank, and then it happens a second time at Randy’s house. I just feel like Jim is the kind of person who would have been more freaked out by these occurrences than he is shown to be. I mean, we have him rushing in with the cops at the end, but I don’t know. It just felt like a very anticlimactic Jim reaction. Also, Delia definitely is starting to believe that something is up with Melinda. Melinda is basically, in so many words, spilling the beans, and here I thought Ned would be the one to do it. That being said, Delia still has not fully connected the dots, however, I feel like it is only a matter of time before she does. Speaking of Delia, I loved the story they had with her and the engagement ring. It is clear that she is still really struggling with Charlie’s death. The ring was a really sweet way of exploring more of what their relationship was like before he passed away.
Overall, like I said, this was a fantastic episode. It had just the right amounts of suspense, drama, and even a little bit of mystery. Romano was brought back into the spotlight, as Randy appears to have joined his army. I’m pretty sure this is the first episode where there has not been a crossing over. I’m curious to find out what Romano’s army has been up to and what they have planned.
Best Moment:
-Jim coming to the door, and you think it’s the house where Melinda and Wyatt are by the way they cut it, but in the end it’s the wrong house.
-Jim comes to the rescue with the cops.
Best Quote(s):
Melinda: It's been a long time since anything living scared me like that.
Melinda: You bought me roses.
Jim: Dr. Phil encourages the occasional romantic gesture.
Melinda: It's a signal, from Randy.
Jim: Thought it was a signal from me saying, "I love my crazy wife."
Melinda: I just– I wonder what it means.
Jim: It means Randy owes me fifty bucks.
