Ghost Whisperer – S2E18 – Children of Ghosts
Once again, we have a decent episode. It is nothing terribly special, but it does manage to touch on a rather unconventional topic. Anytime you can have a unique topic, it inherently makes the episode seem fresher.
Homer the dog makes a return!! Melinda is still having trouble getting him to cross over, and now he also has a new friend in Bob. They always make Homer’s appearances fun to watch, and this episode was no different. The fact that Bob knows Homer is there causes chaos for Delia, who thinks he is just going nuts. Cesar Milan, aka the Dog Whisperer (oh can we momentarily marvel at the obvious namesake similarity), makes a guest appearance. Melinda uses the opportunity to ask him for advice on how to help Homer.
I actually liked the ghost story in this episode. The ending, with Julie’s discovery that the piano teacher she has loved so much is actually her real mother, was precious. Honestly, it really made me dislike the ghost, Valerie. I love Kathleen Wilhoite from her days on Gilmore Girls, but I really did not like her character in this episode. The ethical and moral issues that arise from taking someone’s child, regardless of how well you raise the child, is just something that I cannot get past. She robbed Julie’s real mother of like 16 years with her daughter. 16 years of moments they can never recreate and will never get back.
Jim still really wants that child. He makes yet another comment about it to Melinda just before Julie arrives, which she quickly shoots down. It is interesting that even though he feels this way, he seemed a tad resistant to the idea of fostering Julie. However, it is hard to ignore Melinda’s reasoning that they really are the only place in Grandview where Julie’s problems would be understood. I have to wonder what might have happened to Julie had Melinda not stepped in to help. She literally was being branded as an undesirable foster kid. For a “mother” who supposedly loved Julie, Valerie was just plain cruel to her, making her feel more lost and unloved than she already did. Fortunately, Melinda was not so quick to give up on her, and Julie’s story got a happy end.
Payne once again manages to make Jim a tad irritated by his presence. He sometimes cracks jokes at not so appropriate times. I do like that he is getting very adept at helping out with the ghost busting. He has become an integral part of Melinda’s “team,” so to speak.
Overall, this is a fairly decent episode, with a reasonably interesting ghost story. I’m trying to find new ways of describing my feelings, so there’s my attempt. Don’t judge. I’m sensing that Romano might appear in the next episode. The reason being Homer’s growling at the end of the episode. I really hope Homer doesn’t inadvertently end up getting sucked into Romano’s army or something similar. That would be so sad. Homer is such a sweet dog and he deserves the light. Anyway, on to the next episode.
Best Moment:
-Julie reuniting with her birth mother
Best Quote:
Mel: Hey, and you know what, we’ve always got Homer, even though he won’t come inside.
Jim: Man’s dead best friend.
Mel: You know what, maybe he’s just here to watch over us. A watch dog.
Jim: Yeah, if I was a burglar, I think I would avoid the house with the invisible dog that can’t bite me.
