How To Get Away With Murder – S1E3 – Smile, Or Go To Jail
Another fantastic episode. I’m really starting to love this show.
I think the story I was most drawn to this episode was Wes and Rebecca, and the way he goes about trying to help her. We, once again, really get the impression that Wes has a good head on his shoulders, and that he is driven, at least to a certain degree, by a strong sense of morality. Wes’ determination to support Rebecca, the one person who has no one else to speak for her, and his subsequent trophy win could be interpreted as Annaliese’s inner desire to return to practice law for the right reasons, rather than just to win the case. I was happy, and not at all surprised when she agreed to take Rebecca on as a client.
The one thing that I loved about Wes winning the trophy, was the way in which he won it. It wasn’t because he did something illegal to get evidence, and he wasn’t even really trying to win the trophy, or Annaliese’s praise. He simply took a stand on something that he felt strongly about, and was determined to stick with his convictions regardless of what might happen to him, or his position as an intern.
We also meet Micheala’s fiancé, Aidan, in this episode. Through this, a possible explanation as to why Micheala seems to hate Connor so much in the present day scenes arises. It turns out that Aidan and Connor had a fling while at boarding school together. I found it just a tad hilarious that of all the people Aidan could have had past relationship with, it had to be Connor. The one person who has already been proving himself to be a huge pain in Michaela’s life. I don’t know that I’d qualify them as arch-nemeses yet, but they certainly don’t get along. Fuel on the fire. That being said, Aidan is kind of whipped by Micheala, and she can be a little scary, so I do understand to a certain extent why he never revealed this little rendezvous to her. Still though, not cool lying about past relationships, man. Given what we see with the missing ring, I question to what degree Aidan may or may not be involved with Sam’s murder. I don’t really see what possible motivation he could have to be involved. Plus, the degree to which Micheala freaks out when the ring goes missing suggests that he has no clue what is going on. Of course she also doesn’t want the ring to incriminate her, so maybe her reaction was just that and had nothing to do with possibly having to explain its absence to him. Speaking of relationships, I’m curious to see how the whole Frank and Laurel thing is going to play out. Seems to me like she’s playing hard to get, but is it possible that she wouldn’t mind being one of Frank’s girls? I think the idea of having to work for a girl’s attention is new for Frank, so it will be interesting to see how he handles the situation.
The case of the week, honestly, was not as memorable for me as the previous two episodes. However, I think this is mostly due to the fact that there were so many other interesting things happening. I think the case did lend itself well to the episode’s idea that everyone has something to hide, and that you really can’t trust anyone. It was also interesting to see the way in which Annaliese seemed to relate to the crazy bomb mom, as they both were in relationships where they want more than what they have. I’m curious as to whether or not bomb mom will make a return, given that she never actually made it through trial. Maybe though the writers decided that she and her crazy lover deserve to live their days in peace on the run from the law and we’ll never see them again.
Overall, this was another strong episode, and that ending was great. Definitely unexpected. With each episode, I’m finding myself more and more invested in this show. I enjoy trying to figure out all of the little mysteries , and learning more about the smartly written, complex, interesting characters. I can understand why ABC went out of its way to advertise this show. It is well worth the watch, and I look forward to the remainder of the season.
New Theories:
-Maybe Lila is still alive….based on that phone call.
