How To Get Away With Murder – S1E4 – Let’s Get to Scooping
These intros are starting to sound a bit repetitive, but this week was another great episode of television. In a certain respect, because the nature of the show is like building blocks, where each episode builds upon the previous, it is difficult to say at this point that any one episode is bad. They are each pieces of a grand puzzle, and so at this point, we can’t say if any of the episodes or plots is unnecessary to the greater story. So long as I continue enjoying figuring out the greater story, then each individual episode is doing its job.
All I can say right now is poor Oliver. He was so sweet when he was basically telling Connor that he wanted to be in a real relationship, and then for him to have to hear that message. My heart broke for him. On the bright side, I think that Connor may have learned a lesson in this episode. His reaction, both to Paxton’s death and to Oliver kicking him out, seemed to indicate that maybe he is realizing that the sex games he plays to get information are actually much more harmful than he realized. That being said, it will be interesting to see whether or not there is a change in his behavior moving forward.
I was shocked that they went so far as to have Paxton commit suicide. Wow. Did not see that coming. Michaela as a shooting star is an interesting concept, but to compare her to Paxton seems a tad extreme. I know she is high strung, and that the present day scenes have shown her completely losing it, but I just don’t quite see her going so far as to harm herself. I think she has too much pride for that. I am curious as to what the end result of her present day meltdown is going to be. They’re obviously emphasizing it for a reason. Will she get them all caught? Will she somehow end up taking all the blame herself out of guilt? Then maybe season two would somehow center around Annaliese and her team defending Micheala? Although that introduces a huge conflict of interest, so probably not. My point is, there has to be a reason they’ve made such a point about her inability to deal with what is happening.
Those last nine words that ABC pressed so hard, well they were certainly shocking. I really loved that whole scene though. The stripping off of the make up and the wig, which are essentially a mask, to physically display Annaliese’s vulnerability was beautiful. By confronting Sam, Annaliese is placing herself in a situation where she has little control, and to so artfully displaying that was just awesome to watch. I am sincerely curious now as to what will happen between her and Sam. This knowledge of his affair, in my opinion, further incriminates him as being Lyla’s killer. If that is the case, and he believes Annaliese is on to him, things could get very dangerous for her. Also, I have a feeling she is going to figure out that Nate lied to her. How could she not suspect that after seeing those pictures?
Again, this was a genuinely fun and exciting hour of television. This show is becoming one of my favorites of the 2014 television season. The present day murder story sort of has an “I Know What You Did Last Summer” vibe. I look forward to the next episode.
New Theory:
-Sam and Lyla, one way relationship, he kills her because she won’t sleep with him
-Griffin killed Sam because Sam was sleeping with Lyla
