How To Get Away With Murder – S1E5 – We’re Not Friends
ABC gave us another strong, interesting, and entertaining episode.
It was clearly a Laurel-centric episode, and I enjoyed getting to see more of her character. I do find it interesting how invested Laurel seems to be in the case of the week. Given that the case involves child and spousal abuse, one has to wonder if this might be a touchy subject for her for some reason, perhaps an undisclosed personal issue from her past. I would actually like to learn more about Laurel. I think she proved in this episode that there is a lot more to her character than the soft spoken girl we have seen thus far. When it comes to something she feels passionate about, Laurel is just as determined as Wes to protect the client, even going so far as to do something illegal. Frank seems to find this fact pretty upsetting. Personally, I think Frank is falling in love with Laurel. It’s either that, or she has become a challenge he refuses to lose. In the present day story, he is vehemently apologizing for something, which I don’t think he would do if she was just a challenge. She goes to him for help with the trophy, and of course, there was the kiss too. So, I’m not sure what to make of their relationship at this point.
Aside from Laurel, we have the Annaliese and Sam parts of the episode. They are one messed up situation, and the triangle with Bonnie just makes things all the more insane. We find out that Sam cheated on his first wife with Annaliese. Cheater is as cheater does. I feel like this behavior shouldn’t come as a surprise to Annaliese. Bonnie, of course, witnesses Sam getting kicked out, because she is always at their house. Why? I mean, I know you’re Annaliese’s right hand girl, but go home, Bonnie. On top of this, Bonnie’s little display while getting the tape evidence for Rebecca cost Nate his job. Now Nate, understandably, thinks it’s Annaliese’s fault. I forsee Nate being on a mission to get revenge on Annaliese for his job loss. Do I see him going so far as to kill Sam to do it? Not really. Maybe he would, but I’m not sure I buy it. He’s angry, but I’m guessing he’ll take a “destroy you with the legal system” approach. After all, lawyering a lawyer is probably the best way to take them down. Poetic justice if you will. Either way, we haven’t seen the last of Nate.
After watching this episode, I officially am of the belief that Rebecca did not kill Lila. Not that I ever actually believed that she was, but her reaction to the wallpaper tells me that she believes Sam killed Lila. Whether or not she killed Sam is an entirely different story. If she did, I call self defense, because I get the feeling that she is scared of him, meaning he probably attacks her first. With this revelation, Annaliese has just lost control over her favorite puppy, as he found out she lied about the phone. I’m curious to see how this changes their relationship.
Overall, there was definitely some meaty information in this episode. I am enjoying each new addition to this wild mystery, and each episode gets more and more entertaining. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. This show is well worth the watch, and I cannot wait for the next episode. Of course, that may have something to do with the fact that next week is all about Asher. That automatically tips the episode in my favor. Till next time, happy tv viewing!!
