Supergirl – S1E1 – Pilot
I knew with all of the hype over the last few months that this show was going to come out with a bang. After watching the Pilot, I can honestly say that it definitely surpassed my expectations. It was a fantastic introduction to what could become, dare I say it, my new favorite superhero. Let’s break it down.
As is the nature of a pilot, there was lots of world building and exposition. The opening scenes depicting Kara’s past were well done. The set design for planet Krypton was really cool and I enjoyed the actress playing young Kara. I’m curious to possibly see more of her in the future, maybe via flashbacks of Kara’s childhood on Krypton. Supergirl’s backstory wouldn’t quite be complete with out mention of cousin Kal El. Having him appear in shadowy form is actually a great way to include him in Kara’s story without ever really taking the focus off of her. He sticks around just long enough to deliver Kara to her adoptive parents. I know every comic fan out there was ecstatic to see Mr. and Mrs. Danvers being played by Dean Cain and Helen Slater, who have held the roles of Superman and Supergirl in prior incarnations of their respective stories. Talk about the perfect choice. I really love that interconnectedness. It would be fun to see more cameos of that nature as the show continues.
Flash forward to present day Kara. Melissa Benoist’s portrayal of our new superhero is brilliant. Kara’s quirky charm is hard not to love. From the start, you really believe that she is destined for great things. Even though she has all these great powers, the way we see her interact with the human world is incredibly relatable. The scene where she watches the news report about the plane rescue says so much about her as a character. She’s giddy with excitement, eating pizza, but she doesn’t miss a beat yelling at the tv when the reporters start criticizing how much destruction was caused to the bridge. Her reaction is this great mix of child-like excitement about finally embracing her powers and the fearlessness with which she is taking on this new role. She carries this attitude throughout the episode, and it is so fun to watch. I look forward to seeing how her character develops as she continues to settle into her new identity as a superhero.
