Mistresses – S1E2 – The Morning After
And commence the fallout from Savi’s night with Dom. One thing that I find interesting about the portrayal of this story is the way in which we as viewers are made to feel somewhat sympathetic of Savi despite her indiscretion. Usually, if you cheat, you bad. It’s not very often that a show explores the guilt of the cheater, or looks at the reasons behind why it happened. At least not in the same way that this show is doing it. Actually, the April/Paul situation is a perfect contrast to Savi and Harry. April is dealing with the fact that Paul had a baby with another woman. Throughout the entire episode, any mention of Paul and his mistress is posed with a highly negative response. We never see Paul, apart from photos, and the shady way in which his baby mama went about contacting April just makes the whole thing very one sided in favor of April. With Savi, we have the shots of her crying in the bathroom, and her conversations with Karen that emphasize the guilt and remorse she feels. As much as you want to dislike her for what she did, you can’t help but feel a little bit bad for her. Of course you’re also obviously heartbroken for Harry, who apologizes for being upset, and unknowingly meets the man who slept with his wife. I thought it was strange, assuming Savi and Dom have been working together for awhile, that Harry and Dom have not met before. Maybe Harry coming to take Savi to lunch is a first occurrence? I don’t know. It just seems a little bit odd. I want to say that I think Savi should have told Harry what happened, not for her own sake, but because he deserves the honesty. At the same time, you know it’s gonna devastate him, so I almost don’t want him to find out for that reason. This is why you don’t cheat. To much complication and confusion and bad feelings and….yeah. Don’t do it.
Speaking of April and Savi, I don’t blame April at all for being so upset with Savi’s little revelation. Why in the world would she think that then was a good time to blurt that out? After having just listened to how upset April was about Paul cheating. That was selfish on Savi’s part. So not the time. And then to tell Karen that April should be more understanding as a friend…sorry. No. April has a lot more on her plate. Not only is Miranda after her money, she also finds out that Paul bought Miranda a car, and on top of that, she basically has discovered that the man she loved was not who she thought he was, and she has no way of confronting him about it. All that added up is hardcore stressful to even imagine, let alone actually be living out.
In other news, Karen is now getting phone calls from Sam Grey, Tom’s son, and she believes that Sam has a crush on her. Yet she continues to contact him. Why, Karen? Why? She agrees to get coffee with him. Then she flips out on him for not leaving her alone. Sorry, but that was your fault, Karen, not his. That was totally out of line. Even if he does have a crush, he’s a 20 year old kid who’s like half your age. A crush on an older woman is not that unexpected. Especially when you’ve been leading him on. And all the stuff with the investigator….*repeatedly pounding my head against a wall.* You should have cut ties from the get go like Savi has repeatedly been telling you. Listen to her please!
Joss now definitely has a friend in Alex. The scene where she has the guy tied up while she’s on the phone with Alex telling her to give her all the details, and the guy is just like “seriously?” was great. Such a Joss “I’m always in control” moment. Based on what we’ve seen in these first two episodes, Joss seems like kind of the outsider of our core 4 women, so it was kind of nice to see her forming a friendship outside of that group. Also, I really liked the scenes with Joss and Harry and then Joss and Savi. It’s clear that Joss genuinely cares about her sister and brother-in-law, and her desire to help them fix their problems was really sweet to see. I kind of wish Savi would have opened up to Joss (especially instead of poor April, who was already overwhelmed). On a side note, Joss’ outfit when she walks into the kitchen to get juice…wow. That must have been some party.
Overall, as a second episode, this perhaps wasn’t my favorite thing in the world in terms of plot, but it did flesh out some more of the character relationships, and the events from the last episode. It was very expositional, and not quite as meaty as I prefer. We’re definitely still in a “getting to know you” phase of the show.
Best Moment:
The Joss/Harry and Joss/Savi scenes were by far my favorite. Joss was the hero of the episode. As evidenced by that outfit in the opening scene.
Best Quote(s):
April: Paul had a baby with another woman.
Savi: My thing can wait.
Karen: It could have been worse. It could have been your patient to whom you prescribed lethal doses of morphine.
Savi: That’s funny. Sick, but funny.
Joss: I can get you in.
Alex: How can you do that?
Joss: Because I’m a terrorist.
