Mistresses – S1E5 – Decisions, Decisions
I thought this was a fairly good episode, and it ends on a pretty noteworthy cliffhanger.
Savi has metallic breath, which is apparently a symptom of pregnancy, so Harry is getting closer to finding out what has actually been going on for like the past month. I feel bad for him. And every time he makes those comments about being in love forever, I just kind of have to cringe. He’s so excited about the possibility of a pregnancy, it’s kind of heartbreaking to watch. Talk about a cliffhanger though. Geez. I’m assuming that the only reason Savi ends up telling him when she does is because of the doctor’s warning about stress. Seeing as keeping that secret was kind of the number one stress point in her life, well, it makes sense that that would be the first issue to tackle.
Savi’s attitude towards Dom is kind of unfair in certain respects. Dom may not have the stress and sleepless nights resulting from knowledge of an affair and resulting pregnancy, but let’s remember that it wasn’t Dom that cheated on Harry, it was Savi. Now, that doesn’t make him a good guy in this scenario, as he still knowingly participated in the affair, but it just seems like Savi is blaming him for all of her problems instead of really taking responsibility for her own actions. Plus, let’s remember that she made the first move that night. I can buy that Dom loves her just because of how he acted towards her in the pilot, before their little indiscretion ever happened. Maybe I am naively misinterpreting his initial intentions, but he didn’t, and still doesn’t, seem like the kind of guy who would go looking for an affair like that. By no means am I defending either one of them, but merely suggesting that there is fault on both sides, and that Savi taking out her anger and confusion on Dom is not fair.
So, I thought in the last episode that Alex and Sally broke up, but apparently it wasn’t official until this episode. And now Joss and Alex are becoming a little bit more than friends. Harry walking in, seeing them in the kitchen and then walking out was great. He didn’t want to be involved, but at the same time, given that he seems to genuinely care about Joss, he ends up giving her the advice she doesn’t want to hear but needs to hear. Can Alex and Joss just be friends? Neither Harry, nor Sally seem to believe so, and honestly, neither do I. They’ve already crossed the friend line, and I can’t see them going back at this point. Sally’s opinion of Joss and Alex has certainly changed. I guess understandably so. However, blaming Joss for the problems in her relationship with Alex is bull. Woman up and take some responsibility for your own relationship issues. It’s funny how the one who seems to have to be in charge of every aspect of the relationship also thinks she has no fault when everything crumbles around her.
April experiences every parents worst nightmare when Lucy goes missing. It turns out though that she just cut school…with Richard’s daughter, landing April and Richard in the principal’s office together. I did find it amusing that the reason the girls skipped school was to see Selena Gomez. Classic. Richard seemed to handle the situation with a much leveler head which resulted in a rather comedic dialogue between him and April despite the awkwardness present. I like that they also establish that Lucy, despite being a kid, is not blind to the effects of the Miranda situation on April’s life and attitude. Kids know more than adults give them credit for. It’s a fact.
Karen, despite her utter lack of street smarts, apparently is book smart enough to be a keynotes speaker for some symposium, so that’s nice I guess. However, this whole thing with the investigator is going to come back to bite her. Especially now that Elizabeth has pretty much made everything look even more guilty by backing out of the life insurance money, and convinces Karen to forge fake notes. Karen just keeps digging this hole that she is in deeper and deeper. Karen’s being dumb and poor Jacob is getting caught in the crossfire. A guy who genuinely cares about her. I honestly just feel nothing but frustration about everything in Karen’s story.
Overall, another decent episode, and one with a pretty intense cliffhanger. Clearly the fallout will result in a whole new stream of drama. Poor Harry. All the new drama should make things more interesting from here on out. So, on to the next one.
Best Moment(s):
-Alex walks in on the guy passed out in Joss’ bed
-Harry walks in, sees Joss and Alex, and not wanting to be involved at all immediately walks out.
-Richard and April in the principal's office
Best Quote(s):
Alex: Well it looks like you guys had fun last night.
Joss: Mmm…as much fun as you can have with somebody that only watches cartoons. When they’re that pretty, generally they’re not that interesting.
Joss: You know, if you’re too sad to hike, I totally understand.
Alex: Not so fast lazy bones.
Harry: I had that horrible dream again. I was trapped inside a giant mummy’s foot with Madonna. And she wouldn’t stop singing.
Savi: I hate that dream. On many levels.
Richard: At least they were chaperoned.
April: By a woman who drives a Hummer. Not comforted.
Savi: For this one meal, I am officially not pregnant. I have to pee, for the nineteenth time.
Lucy: I wanted to meet Selena.
April: Well I want to meet the pope so I can punch him in the face.
Harry: I think your sister’s mad at me. I had a fight with her this afternoon.
Savi: You really want to talk about my sister right now?
